1962     The Birth ........

Your Credit Union was established out of a need. That need was the availability of money at reasonable rates of interest.

In 1962 a personal loan from a bank was a scarcity and "uptown" money lending institutions charged 50% per annum. Bob Sloss was concerned with the high charges associated with borrowing money and he decided to do something about it. Bob had heard of credit unions and sought all the information then available from existing Credit Unions.

On 13th March, 1962 a Steering Committee was formed for the purpose of determining the viability of forming a credit union of Customs staff. Members of the Steering Committee were:

A.E. (Ernie) Sharkey - President
R.D. (Bob) Sloss - Secretary
B.E. (Barry) Allen
H.F. (Harry) Hilly
F. (Frank) Jackson
S.B. (Stan) Owen
L.T. (Leo) Slevin
B.E. (Brian) Wilkinson

On 29th May, 1962 a meeting of all interested Customs staff was called and 9 Directors and a Secretary and Treasurer were appointed. A great deal of effort was expended formulating the inaugural set of Rules and achieving registration and your Credit Union commenced business on 12th July, 1962. The foundation Directors were:

R.D. (Bob) Sloss
B.E. (Barry) Allen
B.L.  (Brian) Cody
H.F. (Harry) Hilly
S.B. (Stan) Owen
K.G.  (Kevin) Lenox
P.A. (Paul) Murphy
K.B. (Kevin) McMahon
H. (Harry) Duckworth
The new Board was assisted by:
B.E.  (Brian) Wilkinson - Secretary
R. (Ralf) Farnham - Treasurer

A financial institution for Customs staff was born!
